Just finished Luis’ Harness DVD in it’s entirety, and man I was blown away by the sheer creativity. I have Marcelo Garcia’s DVD’s and expected some overlap, but there wasn’t much. Luis covers the following skills and ideas:

1) Harness grip details including hand position, and where specifically to keep your arms to hold them in tight while at the same time threatening for the choke if they expose their neck. Now I understand why I have been hit and miss with this position.

2) The concept of using the harness as a position within itself like mount, cross-sides, etc. Luis goes on to explain that this is his gyms primary position of transition. This was a really empowering frame to view the creative process from. It allows a practitioner to take any move and build a game around it as opposed to viewing it in isolation. Chris Brennan has done the similar things with the kimura, and likewise Renner Gracie with his achilles lock game.

3) Getting harness from the crush-sides/shoulder of justice position, including details on crush-sides, harnessing from the traditional cross-sides, as well as north south, and knee on stomach.

4) Forklift pass, which IMO is a much safer variation of the traditional double under pass, and harnessing.

5) Attacking quarter position top with side ride harness, drills for transitioning from side ride, to front head lock, to side ride on the other side, ‘Switch knee’ method of getting hooks, as well as a counter to the switch knee counter.

6) Finishes from the harness including 3 variations of the ‘Jaguar choke’ *LOL* from what I’d describe as a harness/cross-side position, various arm triangle positions, and one arm rear naked chokes (yes one arm, and I’ve gotten two people to tap this week from this position).

7) Cranking counter to get your arm in when they tuck their chin.

8. Getting the harness from a front bodylock by countering their peek out counter.

9) Luis’ version of the alligator roll choke with lots of details and drop guillotine counter if your partner counters the roll.

10) Mobility drills with harness.

11) Several counters to counters from side ride control.

12) Details for crushing your partner when he/she sits up to defend the harness.

13) Trapping their arm defending the choke with your leg, and reverse triangle from the arm trap into an armbar.

14) Crucifix with your leg (couldn’t believe this) from cross wrist.

15) Transitioning between the Jaguar chokes, the ‘Gift Wrap’ (as Matt Serra calls it) hand position, and getting the hooks. Working all three together to create confusion and openings.

16) The DVD ends with Luis using these moves during sparring sessions with his purple and blue belts ( BTW Jonathon Wright needs a BROWN already ).

Recently received the Luis Gutierrez Slo Flo JJ DVD, and here is my review of it. This is a two volume dvd, with volume one dealing with the Harness position and volume two covering the Chin Strap, V Pass, X Pass, and it also has an interview with Luis, on Tempo rolling.
Volume One, I absolutely loved this DVD, Luis takes the Harness position and shows you every way possible to obtain it.

Technique one, starts off showing you how to get it first from side control with the near and then the far arm. He shows "The Shoulder of Justice" position to make your opponenet uncomfortable so you can set up the Harness.

Technique two, shows how to set it up from North South and also with Knee on Belly.

Technique three, shows how to get the harness from 1/4 position front and side ride, and then taking the back.

Luis also shows how to get the Harness while passing the guard using the fork lift guard pass. After showing you how to obtain each position and controlling it he does a quick review.

Luis then shows you how to get your submissions from the Harness position.

I'm not going to go into super detail on each submission.

Submission series one, is a choke from the Harness position from side control with a follow up choke that looks like the cobra clutch if he trys to counter the first one and then how to get the arm bar if he gives you another type of resistance and he follows that up with a loop choke or as he calls it a rat choke or wrap not sure what term he is using. He then follows it up with a head and arm triangle.

Submission series two, is taking the back and getting the rear naked choke, Luis uses the same principals that Marcelo Garcia does about obtaining the choke before getting the hooks in or while putting the hooks in. He shows how to take the back choke quickly from each position. Luis then goes in depth into how to get the choke from the back dealing with different types of resistance.

Submission series three is from the 1/4 position, he starts with dealing with the sit out from the front 1/4 position and how to get the back from the sit out position. Luis then shows a nice way to get the Noguiera choke from the front 1/4 position. The next submission I am not sure of the name of, but anyone who saw the socal pro am dvd saw Glover pull it on Andy Wang. It's a step over loop choke with the Gi on without I'm not sure what it's called. But it's a very nice sub when you have a guy shoot in on you and you sprawl back.

Luis then demonstrates how to flow using the Harness from moves to moves with his opponent giving him resistance. It's a nice display of all the ways to flow with the harness position.

Luis then shows how the Harness applies to MMA.

Then to finish it off Luis shows you some more details for the Harness. He starts it off using a drill where his partner is trying to roll, while Luis is just making sure he keeps the harness in the correct position. He then addresses side ride one more time with a nice set up sub. He then continues with how to deal with the side ride position and the different counters your opponent may use. Luis then moves on to dealing with taking the back and the different resistances your opponent make give you. He shows some really nice set ups from the back from this position. He ends it from side control with a nice set up.

The first Volume closes with a hilite video with clips from the 03 florida seminar, some other rolling and what looks to be maybe a future instructional.

I have to say I really loved this DVD, the only things I can say I disliked were more technical things in the production than anything else. I think he should have chaptered the submissions for each position instead of leaving it as one whole chapter that you have to view to get to the part you want to see. The only other gripe I have is some of the camera work, Luis should use a tripod, or at least a monopod to keep the camera work a little less shaky. It wasn't terrible but it was there, it made it feel a little more Guerilla Video style than an $80 instructional. I give Volume one Five out of Five stars.

Vol. 2 covers the chin strap and the V and X guard pass and tempo rolling.

I didn't enjoy this one as much as I did the first one. I liked the chin strap part a lot for no gi, I really didn't like the V pass because I just don't see that working and it's not something I would try but that is JMO other people may see this and jump all over it but it just wasn't my cup of tea. The X pass at the start was very cool, I didn't like the fall to guard to get said sweep because in a comp I will not fall and get swept hoping to get another sweep in return, it's just too dangerous to try in a comp IMO, so the first part of the X pass was really nice the later additions I really didn't care for at all and this is coming from someone who loves to play the X guard and does so rather often.

I liked his interview on tempo rolling a lot as well. Over all I felt this dvd was a lot more filler than anything else with a lot of clip time compared to the first volume. I think the chin strap section makes this DVD worth it though because it makes up for the parts I didn't care for. I would give this vol a 3 out of 5 stars and give the over all set a four out of five stars because there just may be people who find a use for the V pass.

Overall summary is this is a great set for the Harness and chin strap alone, if he had put just these two it would have been an incredible set. I felt it was a tad pricey for DVDrs and the Guerilla style filming but the content is there and that's what counts most.

I recommend this DVD to anyone who wants to take the back and keep it Marcello Garcia style, I have seen him use these very set ups and if you want your back control game to get better this is where you need to go because nothing addresses this position like Luis has period! He has seriously broken down a position and showed you how to obtain the submissions like few others can. He has raised the bar on positional dvds in terms of information with the likes of Stephan Kesting and Jen.

A four out of five stars and anyone who doesn't get this set either knows how to get the back position from any position and control it and get the sub, or they don't care if they learn it.

Those are the only two people who won't be buying this DVD, if you aren't Marcelo Garcia you should be buying this PERIOD!

I speak from experience when I say that what Luis and his guys have innovated is some of the best stuff out there right now. I have usedit, my own guys have used it, and I have had it used on me. This is great stuff and Luis' ability to impart his knowledge onto others is second to none. Go get these DVDs now. I promise you won't be disappointed.

Luis Gutierrez Chin Strap and Harness Review
Before I review the DVD set, I just want to give you a little of my history with Luis and SBGi.

First off, I am not a member of SBGi and have no vested interest in anything SBGi. The only dealings I have with them was the one time I went to the Singer Brothers “Hard Core Gym” in Athens, Ga. For Luis’ “Harness and Chin Strap” seminar. The main reason I went was because of several interactions I had with Luis, Matt and the Singers over the net, and since I was in Ga. At the time, I decide to go and meet them since Matt was always encouraging me to check out a SBG before I could pass judgment on what they were all about.

The biggest testimonial to the effectiveness occurred a week later, when at his debut NHB fight, a Hard Core Gym fighter and fellow seminar attendee with only one year total training, got the harness from the back into a rear naked choke submission. When I asked the fighter how long he’d been using the harness. He told me he learnt it the same time as me. One week earlier.

I was totally impressed with Luis on both a personal and professional level when I met him. He’s a stand-up guy, and great coach and instructor. As impressed as I was with both innovative approach and techniques, and his ability to effectively communicate, it paled in comparison to how blown away I was watching this video. Don’t get the idea that the DVD is better then having him live in person, not at all. It’s just the DVD IS THAT GOOD.

The first thing that impressed me is the Video Quality. I have a 55inch HDTV that’s very unforgiving when it comes to inferior source material. The video is top notch. I really like the steady cam shots too.

The next thing that really impressed me was Luis’ teaching ability. Not only does he do a extraordinary job in teaching the material, but he also goes into details as to why you should do the move and when. He goes to great lengths to give you the rationale’s behind the moves and gives you a game. I also like the method with which he teaches. He goes from point A to point B in a very logic way. And it’s not linear either. He presents the material in an almost follow chart like way, giving you plenty of options in both offense and defense from a given position. The material is present in such a way that allows you to flow seamlessly from one technique to another. Not in a way that just takes you A to B to C back to B, but allows you to flow into any position from any position. It actually teaches you how to transition from one position to the next. Interestingly enough, you can flow from the chin strap to the harness and visa versa (when the situation calls for it) effortlessly.

Lastly, Luis has created a complete and entire system out of each position.

If you practice the material presented on the DVD’s it’ll take your game to another place. His material is easy incorporated into your current and visa versa. You wont learn too many new submissions, but that’s not what this set is about. It’s ALL about position and control. Even though the material presented more than plentiful, as I was watching, I was thinking about al the moves I could easily pull off from positions I’d find myself in utilizing this system.

Luis' stuff is da bomb!!

He came to So Cal a couple of weeks ago and did a law enforcement gig. The stuff that he teaches was very easy to learn and adapt to..

I have the so.flo.jj dvd and must tell you, the stuff works.. Luis taught some friends additional techniques and I have been picking up a lot from what he taught.

Not to mention, the guy is humble and cool to boot..

If you have the chance, pick up a dvd or train with him.. You won't be disapointed..

Luis, if you read this.. Thanks!!

This is an excellent DVD set. I thought Luis did a great job covering the material as a system rather than separate techniques. The real gems are in the live footage.
Looking forward to seeing more in the future!

Thanks for the clips! I've seen a fair amount of BJJ instructional videos/dvds, and most of the stuff they show doesn't really interest me that much because of two things, 1) Most instructionals shows the same moves 2)Not all show/explain the details. The Jiu-jitsu clips that you've posted so far are very innovative, and display techniques that I've never really seen or been exposed to, plus you show moves that's just out of this world! So I finally ordered me a set of your 'So-Flo Jiu-jitsu'(from this site of course). Looking forward to learning from your instructional, and taking my game to the 'next level'. Thanks!
